[You know what Mayfield has been missing out on?
CHAINSWORDS
These machines you may know as 'sounder pounder tree cutterdowners' are somehow swords and your two favorite Warhammer 40k heroes are dueling with them.
None of the smoke associated with chainsaws is to be seen but the sound and the whirring of the blades can't be missed. Not to mention the sparks caused by the clash of blades.
Yes, they're clashing.
Standing a good foot and a half shorter than Garviel, Cain is somehow managing to not get a chainsword blade stuck in his head. He can't fight the Space Marine strength on strength but his ability to deflect the blade must either be instinct or awesome skill. Either way, they still pause every so often because fighting a frakking Astartes is like hitting your head on a brick wall.
Feel free to gawk, think they're insane, or that their weapons can't be wieldy due to physics but they still handle them like they're Jedi Masters.
At the park, of course.
Garviel and Cain will be tagging the threads separately and threadjacking between the two may happen.]

[He shifts his weight for a moment, sheathing his chainsword.]
But be that as it may, I would like to invite you over to my house in a few days for lunch. I have undertaken some basic research into dishes I believe you would like, and intend to provide you with a meal you will enjoy to the best of my ability.

...
h-haha he's serious..............]
Goodness, you really didn't have to. I'm not a picky eater[...IT'S NOT A COMPLETE LIE. She can eat other things, contrary to popular belief!! ...she just... won't choose to do so there's curry around... >____>], but even a restaurant here would be fine to save yourself the trouble. [admittedly she didn't see a man like him in the kitchen - actually it's a bit terrifying even trying to picture him to cook.] I do appreciate the offer, and thank you very much for your consideration, but...

[He waits phlegmatically for her answer, his craggy face calm just mildly curious, more than anything else.]

On one hand, she's been humoring him. On another, she knows Merem will get annoyed, and she really had no good reason to accept something like this other than for kicks. It'll be less troublesome for everyone, sooo...]
School has ended, but I still have leftover paperwork to finish and final reports to turn in. I do apologize, but I'll be too busy this week. You also didn't have to work so hard; I don't want to impose in the least. Again, I'm thankful for your offer, but I'm afraid that I'll have to politely decline. [She smiles apologetically.]

I should probably get back to keeping Cain's training up. [He gives her one last look, unreadable behind the helmet.] Though in all honesty, you are certainly the best here to cross blades with, outside of an Astartes. That night was.... a true challenge.
[With that, he'll turn to address the Commisar with his chainsword, still listening to Ciel, but hiding his body language behind the drill of battle.]
no subject
Not that he knows, so of course he can't be faulted, but it would explain why that sort of approach would just fail to work. It's as Merem said: he really doesn't know her at all.]
Aha, please. If you keep saying that, you'll end up convincing yourself it's not imposing when in reality, it really may be. That would turn to bias, wouldn't it? And you did say that you're not supposed to hold anything of that sort, so please watch out.
[That look is met with her usual soft and gentle smile.] Geez, that was just a spar. It'd be best if we don't have to fight seriously to being with. That would be unfortunate even, I think, if it really came down to such. [Unless he really just lived to thrive on the battlefield. ...Eh, no need to say THAT out loud.] Besides, isn't magecraft heretical to you? I wouldn't have been able to do much without it. [Cain sure threw a fuss about it... but she's teasing there.]
no subject
You may have a point.... I certainly do have a certain degree of positive inclination towards you, but bias might be too strong a word. Friendship, certainly. There is no rule barring the Astartes from having friends among mortals. [Oh the irony of his words.]
Well, none that I choose to follow. Horus forbade us from seeing the remembrancers once he was corrupted, but I make a point not to take anything he did after Davin as a guide for my behavior. He wanted us isolated and inhuman. [Rather like Merem wants Ciel, Garviel muses to himself.]
I believe I can be defend and serve humanity by living within it, and understanding you, as best I can.
[He looks to Cain regarding the question of Heresy.] Cain is from a different time than my own, Ciel. I lived in a Golden age of enlightenment, where peace was just a few breaths away. Cain... lives in a time when mass murderers rule, even within the Imperium, and good men like him need to hide in fear. And the Commissar is afraid of so much. I wish I could help him, show him what the Imperium was like at the pinnacle, before so much fell apart.
But ten thousand years is a lot of time.
[He looks at Ciel, still hidden by his helm] And twenty eight thousand is even longer. Still, I am gratified to have known you, Mamzel Tohsaka, and many others I have met here, Cain included.
[He shakes his head.] But no, in short, your abilities aren't heretical to me. They are clearly the work of a sanctioned, disciplined warrior who understands the risk, just as Rin does.
The great privilege I have as an Astartes of the great crusade is the knowledge of what is and what is not dangerous to humanity. We knew a good deal about the dangers that faced humanity in those days. We didn't just fear everything.
[He takes a breath.] You are no danger to humanity, Ciel. Rather, you are a protector. Very different from myself, but in some ways, similar as well. Though, of course, you'll now deny this. [His body shifts almost imperceptibly at these words, but Ciel knows him well enough to know he's smiling, under that impassive helm.]

Mm, that's good to know. [A small nod, but there's something non-committal about it. Fear isn't about what one knows. Fear is what one doesn't, or the knowledge of being aware of just how much can be lost. But she keeps her mouth shut.]

Re: 2/2
I was teasing you, Ciel. A rare thing from me, I suppose, but it happens, from time to time.
The inhuman may arguably make better soldiers, but they make better monsters as well. And that was Horus' point, in the end. To isolate the Astartes, to take away any commonality with humanity, to make us easier to corrupt and turn against the Emperor when the time came.
[He sighs.] The sad truth is that it worked with about two thirds of the Legions accompanying him. The other third was sacrificed as Istvaan III, which is where I met my fate.
no subject
But despite looking offended she moves on just as easily and quickly.]
If that's his goal, it's still undeniable that he accomplished it well. [Just a small and quiet nod.] But that's going off-topic now, isn't it? It would be rude of me to stall you both more than I've already done.
no subject
Of course. I shall see you soon, no doubt.
[He doesn't quite leave yet, though.] Perhaps now that I have my blade back... we could cross swords once more. Not right now, mind, but being forced to my limit was helpful.
[He squares up to Cain, looking ready to leave, just waiting for her response on that.]
no subject
She eyes that sword.
Hm, so she may have to actually bother reinforcing her limbs next time, maybe? ...Well it's just a chainsword. One additional melee weapon in his arsenal still doesn't warrant her revising too much the strategy that she employed last time. He wanted a good fight, so she'll gauge herself adequately to deliver just that.]
Maybe, we'll see. Well then, I should get back too; Tomoe-san and Matou-san are waiting. Good luck! [That said, she'll be leaving too.]
